Chinese Ink Cartridge Makers Contradict Epson

Chinese Ink Cartridge Makers Contradict Epson: "(Comtex Business Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)SHENZHEN, Mar 30, 2006 (SinoCast China IT Watch via COMTEX) --The lawsuit that Epson filed in the United States against Chinese ink cartridge manufacturers seems to take a favorable turn for the defendants.

'We will publish advertisements on media to give publicity to our independently developed products next week,' revealed a top executive of Ninestar Image Co., Ltd. Epson's ink cartridges also infringes on a patent of Ninestar Image, and the latter has collected enough evidences to wrestle with Epson, according to the executive."

Epson PictureMate Deluxe Viewer Edition

Epson PictureMate Deluxe Viewer Edition review by PC Magazine: "By M. David Stone

The original Epson PictureMate impressed us enough to earn the Editors' Choice for dedicated photo printers, and it has held on to that position against all comers. The PictureMate Deluxe Viewer Edition ($249.99 direct) maintains all the features we liked in the first PictureMate (from true photo-quality output to a low cost per print) and adds still more, most notably a color LCD to let you preview prints. That makes it a shoo-in as our new Editors' Choice.

Like the original, the new PictureMate is designed for portability, but even more so. Both measure 6 by 10 by 6 inches (HWD), weigh 5.5 pounds, and have a handle and a shape that make them look like a mini boom box. But the Deluxe Viewer Edition also has a battery option ($69 direct) with enough juice for a claimed 60 to 80 prints (approximately two hours of continuous printing, according to Epson), so you can take it with you to print photos on the spot, even if there's no place to plug in a power cord."

Retailers make mark refilling ink cartridges

Retailers make mark refilling ink cartridges: "Retailers make mark refilling ink cartridges

By Lori Becker

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Tuesday, March 28, 2006

Printer ink. It's a hot commodity in today's computer age, where everyone from a company president to a 5-year-old elementary school student is burning through ink cartridges in rapid fashion.

And the cost of replacing those empty cartridges can be more than the printers themselves.

That's where an emerging group of retailers — from big office-supply chains to mom-and-pops — comes in, offering a way to soften the sticker shock of ink and toner. These stores are popping up around Palm Beach County and nationwide, refilling those pricey cartridges for about half the cost of buying new."

Staying in the Black

Rant of the Week: Staying in the Black : "Rant of the Week: Staying in the Black

By BOB DALY
Think gas is expensive?

Let's do the math. I paid $18 for a replacement ink cartridge for my printer. Although I'm metrically impaired, I calculated that the 5 milliliters of ink equals just over one-sixth of an ounce.

I'm paying $13,632 a gallon for ink!

Plus, now I have a big-time trust issue with my computer. While using the new cartridge to print 57 pages, I took a bathroom break. Upon returning, there was a terrifying screen on my computer: ''Warning! Low on ink! Replace now! And we really mean it!"

US: RETAILERS´ TO START INK CARTRIDGE WAR

NAMNEWS - News and information for NAMs and KAMs: "US: RETAILERS TO START INK CARTRIDGE WAR
A new battle is brewing in the technology trenches over a very old product: ink. Major retailers are cutting the cost in half for refilled inkjet printer cartridges, taking a once grimy task for hobbyists - who refuse to pay $20 to more than $200 for a new cartridge -and making it available to the masses.

Last Friday, OfficeMax kicked off a marketing campaign for its inkjet refill services across its 900-store chain. This week Walgreen begins a rollout of refill stations at 1,500 of its more than 5,100 stores. "

Xerox unveils cheapest laser printer

The Hindu : National : Xerox unveils cheapest laser printer: "BANGALORE: Laser printers are for offices that need quality — and can afford to pay for it. Inkjets are for the rest of us, home personal computer users, on tight budgets. That has been the accepted wisdom for decades.

Xerox has just turned the logic upside down by unveiling the cheapest laser printer ever offered in India — at a price comparable to many budget inkjet printers.

The Phaser 3117 model costs Rs. 4,500 (exclusive of local taxes). Laser printers used to cost about Rs. 7,000-Rs. 10,000 for the simplest models, while inkjet prices have fallen to as low as Rs. 3,500 in recent months. However, for many lay users who have purchased a printer with their first PC, inkjets have turned out to be a costly proposition. They had to pay for the colour feature, even if they used the PC, mostly for printing letters and documents in black and white. The black ink cartridge ran out within weeks and at typically around Rs. 1,000 for a new 15 millilitre pack. The joke was, the ink was costlier than champagne!"

ABC News: Lexmark E120n

ABC News: Lexmark E120n: "M. David Stone - PC Magazine
With a bargain price ($149 direct), a footprint that needs minimal desktop space, and a paper capacity suitable only for light-duty printing, the Lexmark E120n is a decidedly personal laser printer. But it's a personal printer with a difference—network connectivity.

That makes it a good choice for sharing in a home office or very small office with light printing needs. But if you're looking for a low-cost printer for your home, you likely want it for things like photos, party invitations, school reports, and other projects that require color. If that's the case, you need a color ink jet, not a monochrome laser."

Printers that do it all

ABC7Chicago.com: TechSmart: Printers that do it all: "We're talking today about one of the most important things you can buy to use with your home computer: the printer. If you have a digital camera, your choice of a printer is crucial. Some of these machines can do so many tasks that they're not merely called 'printers' anymore, but 'all-in-one' machines.

What makes these machines 'all-in-one' is that they not only print, but they're also copiers, scanners and, in many cases, fax machines.

'When you consider the power of these units and then think of four separate devices that you'd have to make room for, or stack on top of each other, they really are quite small for what they do,' said John Wallace, Micro Center computer stores."

Ink cartridges: Ammunition in new battle

Chicago Tribune:
"By Eric Benderoff
Tribune staff reporter
Published March 23, 2006, 9:29 PM CST

A new battle is brewing in the technology trenches over a very old product: ink.

What was once seen as a grimy task reserved for frugal technology geeks, environmentalists and hobbyists is now about to be legitimized in a huge way, as at least two big retailers roll out inkjet refilling stations at stores nationwide.

Consumers, who now change printing cartridges more often than lightbulbs, would be able to save up to 50 percent off the cost of new cartridges that are used to print everything from digital photos to term papers and range in price from $20 to $200."

'We were approached by a cartridge reseller (in 2000), and they said, 'Hey if you collect them, we'll pay you for them,'' said Steve Sedlacek, business manager at Sanitary Services in Meridian. 'It is a commodity that can be easily recycled so, heck, why not do it?'"

Easy and hassle free

The Star Online : TechCentral - Malaysia Technology: "HEWLETT-PACKARD has been making printers for a while now, and the latest batches of their photo printers have only gotten better.

Finished in white and grey, HP Photosmart 7830 is a very nice-looking budget printer and though basic, it has a trick up its sleeve – it’s one of the few printers in this price range that comes with a multi-card reader.

When the printer is connected to a PC, the memory card reader allows you to plug in a compatible storage card and transfer images to your PC.

However, the card reader also works without a PC and although the printer does not come with a colour LCD screen for viewing images on the card, it does have the ability to print out a single sheet of A4 paper showing you thumbnails of the images on the card.

Each image is numbered and all you have to do........."

Chinese Cartridge Makers Facing 337 Case

Chinese Cartridge Makers Facing 337 Case: "China IT Watch Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)GUANGDONG, Mar 16, 2006 (SinoCast China IT Watch via COMTEX) --Chinese ink cartridge manufacturers, especially these located in Guangdong Province, are accused of right infringement in the United States recently, according to news from Guangdong Merchants Association (GMA).

Three enterprises, in light of regulations of the United States' Tariff Act of 1930 and Section 337 of its amendment, filed a lawsuit against 24 Chinese, German, and South Korean cartridge makers in the United States International Trade Commission (ITC), saying that their products impinged on their nine patents. The three plaintiffs required ITC to launch the Section 337 investigations on these products involved and to issue the 'General Exclusion Order'.

Once ITC asserted the right infringement and issued 'General Exclusion Order', Chinese ink cartridge manufacturers will be forbidden to export their products to the United States forever."

Ink at Discount Prices

Telluride Daily Planet: "(ARA) - It seems everyone has a computer and printer these days. They've come way down in price over the years; but one thing that hasn't come down is the cost of ink.

You need multiple ink cartridges for the more sophisticated photo printers and in a lot of cases, your first round of replacements will cost almost as much as you paid for the printer.

Take for example the Epson Stylus Photo R200, a reasonably priced printer that retails for around $100. It uses a total of 6 color cartridges: 1 black, 1 cyan, 1 light cyan, 1 magenta, 1 light magenta and 1 yellow. The first time you replace them at an office store it'll cost you $76.94."

Ink-jet cartridge makers criticize Epson lawsuits

PC World | CEBIT - Ink-jet cartridge makers criticize Epson lawsuits: "Makers and resellers of third-party ink-jet printer cartridges and refills polled at the Cebit show in Germany on Saturday are critical of the way Seiko Epson has been hitting their kind with lawsuits to protect its lucrative cartridge business.

Japan's Seiko Epson, the world's number two printer maker, filed complaints against 25 companies in the U.S. and U.K. in February seeking to bar the manufacture, import, or distribution of aftermarket ink cartridges in those countries.

Aftermarket cartridges typically cost much less than official cartridges and threaten the printer maker's business model, which relies on selling a low cost printer and making profits from future sales of ink.

'They're stealing money from customers. They give them a free printer and then steal their money,' said Brian Suh, marketing director of South Korea's EC World, which makes ink-cartridge refill kits that allow consumers to replenish used cartridges."

Refillable printer cartridges on horizon

Report: Half-price refillable printer cartridges on horizon "Newspaper report says service will be half as costly as buying a new replacement, but some aren't keen on the idea.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - For those tired of spending half the price of a printer just to get a few new ink cartridges, relief may soon be at hand.

Drugstore Walgreens (Research) will soon launch a system that allows customers to refill their old printer cartridge for about $12 to $15, or half the price of replacing the entire cartridge, according to a report Friday in USA Today.

The newspaper also said OfficeMax (Research) and Office Depot (Research) are testing similar arrangements.

The stores are able to charge so much less for the service because profit margins on printer cartridges, where printer manufacturers make most of their money, are so high, the article said."

Inkjet-cartridge refilling about to splash into market

Inkjet-cartridge refilling about to splash into market: "Ryan Jarrell hated spending $25 to $30 each time the cartridge on his inkjet printer ran out. So a few years ago, he bought a home ink-refill kit.

His cost of printing dropped to about $5 per cartridge, but the owner of the Louisville-based video-production company Phoenix Multi-Media found there were downsides to piercing the cartridge with a syringe and squeezing it full of ink.

'You'd best wear old clothes and have a splash mat down or you'll spill (it) on the carpet like I did, and your wife will send you to the doghouse,' Jarrell said. In addition, the refilled cartridges didn't always work.

Jarrell eventually stopped using refill kits, but he said he'd be willing to take his empties to stores that refill cartridges for him."

Refilling printer cartridges is affordable alternative

Times Argus: Vermont News & Information: "SACRAMENTO, Calif. — At CompUSA recently, you could buy a single Lexmark ink cartridge for $32.99 — only $5 less than the price of an entire new printer.

That example starkly illustrates that while the price of most computer hardware has plunged over the years, the cost of ink supplies has barely budged.

That's been a boon to firms like Hewlett-Packard Co., whose printing and imaging business accounted for 51 percent of HP's operating profits in the most recent quarter. But it's been a financial pain for most consumers and has spawned an alternative industry: cartridge refills."

Compatible Ink Cartridges Put to the Test

Compatible Ink Cartridges Put to the Test: "(PRWEB) March 1, 2006 -- Whether you're an advocate of printer manufacturer ink cartridges or have already tried a compatible brand, the question will have occurred to you: Why do original cartridges cost so much?

The price of manufacturer branded cartridges can be in many cases more than twice as much as some alternative brands.

This for many people leads them to conclude that the price difference is probably justified; and that trying a compatible brand is likely to be a gamble that will only end with a broken printer.

Whilst this might be the case in a handful or cases, as with many markets there are quality alternatives which offer a real opportunity to reduce the cost of printing with a virtually undetectable loss of quality. "
