Most office supply stores will accept used-up toner and ink cartridges for free. And some products include envelopes so that people can mail used cartridges to the manufacturer.

But more than 25 South Sound school groups, churches and other organizations are making money through a cartridge charity collection program offered by Rapid Refill Ink.

The Springfield, Ore.-based company — which has stores in Olympia and Lacey — pays groups $2 to $3.50 per cartridge, and as much as $10 for the most popular brands.

The company refills reusable cartridges and sells them at its stores. "
