IF Dan Brown is seeking an even more ludicrous plot for his follow-up novel than the one that drives The Da Vinci Code, he need look no further than the myth of the paperless office.

Since the birth of the personal computer 25 years ago, the prospect that we will move into an entirely digital universe and ditch printed documents is proving more and more remote.

Evidence for the stupidity of this proposition abounds, from the preponderance of paper supplies that can be found even in supermarkets to the healthy profits posted by printer manufacturers.

There are plenty of conspiracy theories about the printer industry, some of which contain a glimmer of truth, most notably the idea that companies make their money flogging overpriced supplies rather than the machines themselves.

So it can only be a matter of time before Tom Hanks is being asked to pose as a paper expert in the follow-up movie, which might be titled Robert Langdon and the Cartridge of Fire, and deal with a secret conspiracy by printer manufacturers to conceal Leonardo da Vinci's long-lost formula for a self-replenishing ink cartridge."
